Rubber Fume
Ingredient/Emission RelationshipsBy B.G. Willoughby
This comprehensive review covers the Rapra Vulcanisation Fume Project - a unique study analysing cure volatiles from a suite of formulations using a common pool of ingredients. The experiments were conducted under strict laboratory control, using the Rapra Gas Transfer Mould, and the analytical findings are presented, discussed, and where appropriate compared with on-site data. GC/MS provided the key to component identifications and all the results obtained in this extensive study are provided in this single source document which includes over 100 tables of data.
Each analysis has provided up to 30 component identifications, in a programme which included 75 different ingredients; found 157 different emissions; studied SBR, NR, EP, EPDM, NBR, IIR, CR and CSM formulations; studied cures at 4 different temperatures; studied post-cure cooling for 6 different time intervals.
A novel feature of the programme was the use of computerised tabulations and search routines for the recognition of such trends, and the data display and interrogation routines are presented in an appendix to the main report. For those wishing to follow these routines themselves, copies of all data are available on disc, to purchasers of the report.
